THE STORY BEHIND CHAMOMILE BARN
I have faint memories of staying at my grandparents’ home in Kortrijk when I was a young child. Waking up to the feel of crisp, ironed bed linen and scent of wooden furniture, the smell of coffee made with chicory for added flavour, drunk from “bols” like in France, just a few miles South-West of this Belgian town, cupped and savoured for comfort. The warmth of the old-fashioned stove in the kitchen, the unique taste of local bread that somehow evokes the scent in the air, a scent that is hard to describe but that I like to think has something to do with the flax that is grown and woven locally, and has been for centuries.
In my late teens, I spent some time in France as an au-pair. I looked after three girls in a chateau with its own moat and turrets, a chateau that was allegedly a gift from Napoleon III to one of his mistresses. I would throw the shutters of my window open in the morning and slowly awaken my senses as I took in the view of the field of sunflowers my room overlooked.
It’s funny how sometimes the strongest memories are largely made up of seemingly insignificant details and sensory recollections.
I associate my memories of France and Belgium with a life that is relaxed and synonimous with quality: where coffees are not drunk in a hurry, but savoured as the world is put to rights between friends and family. Where bonds are created and nurtured. Bonds that are there to last in buildings that are there to last, amongst beautiful furniture and linens. Pretty things that have been carefully chosen for the pleasure they will give over many years to come. They will serve their owners, but also their friends and their children, and in turn, their grandchildren. And the mark they leave through their inextricable link to their owners is lasting. And profound.
With Chamomile Barn, I have tried to piece together items that reflect this lifestyle: beautiful things that have been made to last.
Sourcing them allows me to strengthen my link with my past and my heritage and hopefully add beauty to your home and maybe be part of special memories to come.
Happy browsing.
